Sunday with the Hobbs Family

Formal family portrait shoots, where everyone is coordinated in white or black shirts, powdered and primped, admittedly, don't interest me. But, ask me to come and have blueberry pancakes, hang out and color, take a walk and photograph the nuances of a family Sunday, that is a complete joy! The photographs that result act as a little time capsule, a way to preserve snippets of everyday life that don't linger long.

Again this year, I've had the pleasure and honor to collaborate with radio producer Paul Ingles on a public radio and online documentary. (Our previous project together was Jazz of Enchantment). This project tells the story of one of the most long-lived and influential traditional New Mexican Hispanic musical groups in the state, Los Reyes de Albuquerque y La Familia Martinez.

Tune in this coming week to KUNM (89.9) at 7:50 am and 5:50 pm from Monday 11/30 through Thursday, 12/3 and Sunday, 12/6 at 11 am to hear the seven-part radio series about the rich life and distinctly New Mexican music of Los Reyes de Albuquerque.

Also, I invite you to a special concert and event at the Outpost Performance Space this coming Saturday, December 5th at 7:30 pm. There will be a screening of a 22-minute multimedia piece showcasing photos and video from the documentary, a Q & A with Roberto Martinez, founder of Los Reyes de Albuquerque and Enrique Lamadrid, the humanities scholar from the project, and of course, music by Los Reyes. This book is the result of Jeff's personal journey to retrace the footsteps of George A. Carlson, Jeff's grandfather, who was fighting in France at the time of the Armistice.

By connecting deeply with his own past, Jeff connects us with the footsteps of many soldiers and ideals of the past; the past that is all too present.

The Pinehurst Inn

This summer, I traveled to Bayfield, Wisconsin, a sweet town on the southern shore of Lake Superior – the gateway to the Apostle Islands, to produce a StoryPortrait for an amazing Bed & Breakfast run by Nancy and Steve Sandstrom.

Nancy and Steve are a dynamic couple, juggling fruit salads and french toast, with deeper missions and goals. A main priority for them is offering a setting where people can relax. What a concept! It's bigger than you think. They realize the importance of relaxing; taking the time to reconnect with oneself, each other, and taking the time to listen, to breathe, to come to life again. Another mission is an environmental/ sustainability mission; living on this earth as lightly as possible.

The Santa Fe Living Treasures, an all-volunteer group that I am thrilled to be part of, will honor four more elders in the Santa Fe community today, October 18th.

Jack Loeffler, Zenia Victor, Gaylon Duke and Amarante Romero have creatively and passionately contributed to the lives of others through their service, their life work, their ideas.

Zenia Victor & Gaylon Duke love traveling the world.

In 2000, they started the Bali Art Project, with the mission of giving young people who wouldn't likely have the opportunity to travel, the opportunity. This experience of travel, culture, art, history, religion, community, changes lives.

Jack Loeffler, an adventurer, an environmental activist, a musician, an aural historian, folklorist, anthropologist, sound engineer, radio producer, is a legend.

He has a huge smile, a huge heart and is devoted to the land, and all its inhabitants. When he received the Governor's Award for Excellence in 2008, they called him a national treasure.

Amarante Romero is an old-time Santa Fean. He knows this place, its history, its hardship and the power one person can play in community. He gave credit to families who couldn't pay at the store he ran. He dug wells for those without clean drinking water. He was a voice in the public sphere for water conservation and environmental protection.

Being New Mexican

Last week I was able to take an environmental portraiture workshop at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops with Jonathan Torgovnik. Jonathan is an incredible photographer; compassionate, creative, aware, generous. If you are not familiar with his work, please take the time to watch Intended Consequences and visit his website, Jonathan Torgovnik Photography

A workshop week is never what you expect. You arrive with expectations and your list of needs and the week goes quickly. On Friday, inevitably you realize, or start to realize, what you got out of the week, is not what you expected, but typically what you needed.

The subtle lessons of the week for me: Get back to the heart of inquiry. Find the story. Commit to the moment. And, a big reminder, personal projects are essential.

So, a simple idea came to me, one that I've thought about since moving to New Mexico almost ten years ago. What does it mean to be New Mexican? No matter how long I reside here, I am from Virginia, not New Mexico. So, what does that mean? How do people from New Mexico understand the place, the land, the culture to the depth of it being part of their identity? My inquiry: Place and Identity in New Mexico, "Being New Mexican". I met three amazing individuals this week who shared their story and definition with me. Portraits at Beneficial Farm

They weren't expecting to see me walk into field on a rainy Thursday afternoon, but Kim, Ann and Matthew were gracious to let a random photographer observe and take a few pictures.

Beneficial Farm is biodynamic farm located on an incredible piece of land on Glorieta Mesa, southeast of Santa Fe. It's an amazing place to spend an afternoon. For the people who live and work there it is a beautiful way of life. Thank you for sharing!

Again, as a photographer, you have to find subjects, you have to keep practicing.

Santa Fe Living Treasures, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3), publicly honors elders who have generously served the Santa Fe community with kind hears and good deeds. Their oral histories and photographs are recorded, archived, and made available to the public at teh Fray Angélico Chávez History Library, Santa Fe, NM.

Recently, I was honored to join the committee as the new Living Treasures photographer! Consequently, I had the great pleasure of photographing Ramon Montes, Barbara Hooton and Saul Cohen for the upcoming ceremony.

Santa Fe Living Treasures will honor these three extraordinary elders on Sunday, June 7, 2:00 p.m., at the United Church of Santa Fe, 1804 Arroyo Chamiso. Please come!! This year marks the 25th anniversary for this non-profit group founded in 1984 by peace activist, teacher, author and minister Mary Lou Cook.

Watching actors, directors, producers and crew work together to make a story come to life on the screen is simply marvelous. It's poetry, persistence, vision and devotion. On March 29th, I had the opportunity to work as set photographer for a production of a story by Director and Writer David Floeter of Breathing Media. Falling to Grace is the story of three childhood friends who grew up in the 60's. Thirty-five years later they reunite and are forced to question their values, individual journeys and friendship. It's the story of every generation told through the lens of the 60's generation. The trailer was filmed in Santa Fe, NM and soon the film will be in full production.

Paul Ingles, of Good Radio Shows, and I have started working on another project together, called Musica de la Gente – funded by the NM Humanities Council. We will be documenting the story and music of Los Reyes de Albuquerque. Roberto Martinez, co-founder and eldest member of the group, and his family are at the forefront of presenting, preserving, and perpetuating traditional New Mexican and Mexican folk music. On December 21, 2008 they performed an incredible Holiday Concert at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

The Heart Gallery of New Mexico

The power of photography is hard to deny when pictures have resulted in homes and families for thousands of children, once considered "hard to place". The Heart Gallery of New Mexico became a project of the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) in 2001. Since then, photographers have tried to replace the file head shot with images that truly capture the spirit of each child waiting to be adopted. Those images are then exhibited around the state in hopes that the eyes of those in the frame will connect with the open heart of individuals willing to expand their family. It's working!

The Country Roads of Eldon Edgar Moore

We share our personal stories and words of wisdom to remember and explain our own lives and possibly inspire the lives of others. Some of Eldon's stories of farm life and football, work and love are now documented for relatives, friends and future generations.

Ryanna's Bat Mitzvah

And, what an honor to witness a young woman so optimistic and strong be present and centered in her new role in this world. Such was the case at Ryanna's Bat Mitzvah. I don't think at 12 I had any idea of my potential, of my ability to make a serious contribution to the lives of others and the planet. Some are wiser than others at a young age and Ryanna is one of them... most likely because of her faith, her parents, her community and her individual, unique spirit. I hope she stays forever young.

Steve Northup – Living Treasures Photographer

Steve Northup began his photographic career in 1962 when he joined UPI (United Press International) and worked in Miami and at the Siagon bureau for two years during Vietnam. He also worked for the Washington Post and was a staff photographer at Time Magazine for 20 years.

Steve photographed for the non-profit group, Santa Fe Living Treasures, for years in his hometown of Santa Fe. Making over 70 revealing and reverent portraits of elders whose lives and works contributed to the richness of the Santa Fe community. With a second Living Treasures book due out this coming Summer, featuring Northup's portraits, Steve has retired from this position.

Saluting America's WWI Heroes

Over the last couple of years, Jeff Lowdermilk has made it his mission to connect with a very personal past. His grandfather, George A. Carlson, an American Infantryman from Denver, wrote a detailed WWI diary – allowing Jeff to retrace his footsteps. The journey for Jeff has been one of national and personal significance. Jeff was in the Muese-Argonne region of France for the Armistice, November 11, 2005, when he made the commitment to publish a book, honoring not only his grandfather, but all American soldiers who made the sacrifice for freedom. Saluting America's WWI Heroes, an historical story that allows us to connect with a very important past, was the result. StoryPortrait Media produced this short promotional piece for the book. The Moore Family Farm – Council Grove, Kansas

I spent July 13 – 16th off of J Avenue, a dirt road that winds through lush, rolling prairie in the Flint Hills of Kansas. The days were filled recording some of Eldon Moore's life stories, lessons and philosophies and photographing the landscape and people that have shaped his life. Here is a short sampling of some of the images combined with one of Moore's favorite John Denver tunes.

Paul Ingles, of Good Radio Shows and Cedar Creek Studios, has just produced another great piece for NPR. Albuquerque: A Scene Blooms in the Desert was aired tonight on NPR's Homegrown: Unexplored Music Scenes. StoryPortrait Media images from the Jazz of Enchantment project, produced by Ingles in NM in 2005 – 2006, can be seen on the NPR website. In addition to portraits, StoryPortrait Media produced a multimedia slideshow/ video, combining images and audio, and designed a website to archive the Jazz of Enchantment work in perpetuity. Native American Independent Living (NAIL)

The Native American Independent Living Institute, held in Bernalillo, NM on Wednesday, brought together disabled members of the Native American community to engage in dialog about issues and barriers that prevent them from reaching their desired goal for independent living.

The event was unique, poignant and soon to be political. NAIL will be using StoryPortrait Media images for their brochure, their website, as well as for literature to be presented to the NM State Congress.

Global Green Indigenous Festival and the UN

Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams

Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: Natural Affinities, an exhibition that brings together, for the first time, approximately 97 works by two of America’s best-known artists.

"The professional photographer takes assignments from 'without'... The creative photographer takes assignments from 'within'.

"A great photographer is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed and is, thereby, a true manifestation of what one feels about life in its entirety."

Quotes by Ansel Adams. But, I think both of these remarkable artists work from within. That is why the incredible canvases of O'Keeffe and the impeccable prints of Adams illuminate such emotion and immediacy of an inner moment.

The Middle of a Utah Day | Snapshots

I love throwing the agenda out the window, filling the car with a tent, stove, and a great friend, and heading to wide open spaces where wildflowers bloom and surprises abound. A trip to Utah this past weekend, a mere five and a half hour drive from Santa Fe, was just the quiet, beautiful weekend adventure I needed. We spent a night stargazing on the banks of the San Juan River at Sand Island Campground, three miles from Bluff, UT. We meandered up 163 to 95, down 261 stopping to explore the terrain and picnic on the side of the road. We hiked into Kane Gulch, through fields of fragrant sage to marvel at the canyons, huge rock faces, ruins and cottonwoods. We held our breath down the Moki Dugway to the Valley of the Gods. We wandered on trails marked by cairns, took in the flowers, the soil, the geological wonder all around. We spent an afternoon at the Goosenecks and walked the slick rock at Butler Wash along Comb Ridge barefoot at sunset. It's hard to make time to do nothing but explore. There is always guilt about the work undone. But, to watch ravens fly overhead, and rivers cut through earth, and see the enormity of rock and stone monuments, feel the strength of the wind and watch the earth change color as the day fades away, well, what can I say...

NDI-Zuni

The National Dance Institute(NDI) of New Mexico is a vibrant program. The main facilities are in Santa Fe, but the outreach program touches children throughout the state. Zuni Pueblo is 150 miles west of Albuquerque, NM and 44 miles south of Gallup. The last two weeks of April, dance instructors and musicians brought another element of arts and education to the schools. I only spent a evening there with the NDI crew, but was invigorated by the landscape and the joint NDI and Zuni spirit.

The Global Green Indigenous Film Festival

The First Global Indigenous Film Festival (GGIFF) was hosted in Santa Fe April 18th – 20th. There were 40 films from 9 different countries highlighting the state of the environment throughout indigenous communities around the world. Climate change, and its critical effect on culture, was a central theme. The National Tribal Environmental Council organized the event, with help from numerous local, national and international sponsors, including UNESCO and the National Geographic All Roads Film Project. Indigenous voices, not often heard in the mainstream media, were at the fore – which is one strength of the documentary medium, it's a ground-up, grassroots telling of personal story. It was a POWERFUL, inspiring weekend of film and discussion.

Crozet, Virginia

Place and identity. Every time I return to Virginia, I'm reminded of who I am. I'm grateful to the landscape – the mountains, streams and open spaces that have continually given me the peace of mind to think and be still. I'm enriched by a sense of community from family, history and familiarity that exists no where else.

During this last trip home, I recognized the importance of place and place-making more then ever before. The longing to feel connected in today's increasingly isolating human environment is visceral. I too, want to be part of and participate in community. Crozet, Virginia is an inspiration.

A documentary project proposal I have in the works, called A Race to Smart Growth, will share the efforts and aspirations of the Community of Crozet to ensure its own survival. In the face of extreme growth, Crozet is vigilant in its pursuit of a new approach to and vision for community development.

Growth and patterns of development have the ability to promote community, respect place and identity or destroy it. We've all seen the destruction of place with big-box commercialization strips and sprawling subdivisions and now it's time to understand and support an alternative. Crozet, Virginia can be that case study – illuminating a dedicated community political process that insists on fundamental changes to existing sprawl policies and seeks the revitalization of healthy, sustainable, connected communities where we all want to live, work, play and protect our natural heritage.

I entered the apartment of Gaston Lokvig, and he turned to me as if he'd been awaiting my arrival. I introduced myself, sat down and he promptly said, "Now, can I tell you about me?"

Born in 1912 in Copenhagen, Denmark, his long life is full of story, history, award and acclaim. But, one of the first things he wanted to share was his fascination and love for animals. Listening and feeling, senses paramount to the survival of animals in the wild, offer a knowing sometimes stronger than thought.

I wondered, in this stage in life, what he felt he had left to learn and he answered,

"Patience. Have time to listen. First of all, you only learn by listening, and looking and thinking. Use your own brain to the best."

It's so amazing to be around someone who has an undying, overflowing love and reverence for life. If you're ever questioning, worrying, doubting, he would be the perfect person to sit with as he tells you,

Remembering the Holidays

This blog space is meant to be a place of sharing. My goal is to share inspiring and meaningful stories that I am documenting for others or give tips, inspiration and resources for documenting your own stories. But, from time to time you might find that I reflect on my own experience.

A little background, my family is full of storytellers. However, they're usually all speaking at once, loudly. I suggested this past holiday that after Christmas dinner we sit in the living room by the fireplace and listen to one another's memory of Peyton Eggnog, a concoction that became a seasonal tradition led by my grandfather. Initially, they balked and protested. But, eventually, we sat to reminisce.

An entertaining hour passed easily. I think focusing our attention on one, potentially defamatory, but nonetheless, shared family story, we were able to celebrate a great spirit in a husband, father and grandfather, Bradley Peyton, and remember the many enjoyable Christmas's that we used to spend together.

I've edited the hour down to an eight minute clip. However, it still might be too much information...

Listening is an Act of Love

On December 3, Amy Goodman of Democracy Now interviewed David Isay, founder of StoryCorps – Democracy Now:StoryCorps about the largest oral history project in the United States and the recent publication of the book, Listening is an Act of Love. Since 2003, 30,000 people have shared their stories, typically originating from family members entering a StoryCorps booth and interviewing one another. Diverse tales emerge that allow a deeper understanding of those we think we know. Each CD is archived in the American Folklife Museum and a collection of the stories have been published in this new book. If you don't know of the StoryCorps project, investigate, be inspired and consider sharing your story or interviewing a loved one. Every month, Peace Talks Radio airs a new episode and theme on peacemaking and conflict resolution that's relevant to daily life. The segments come in the form of personal stories from individuals, who have chosen the path of outreach and activism. What each offer is an example and an awareness that at school, in the workplace, in personal relationships and in community, we have the opportunity to engage in nonviolent communication. On Friday, December 7th, Peace Talks hosted their annual fund raising appreciation party and celebrated their year of work. Check it out!

Thanksgiving!

I am blessed with so many amazing friends (and now they're multiplying with incredible kids)!! I spent my day of Thanksgiving with Katie, Jim, Owen and Ella; a fabulous family and the most delectable dinner hosts. It's always great to be with them and their smiles and laughter, playfulness and creativity. They embody a soulful abundance and the most hospitable warmth...that I tried to capture through the lens. Before the perfect golden turkey and maple pumpkin pie went in the oven, we spent some time in the studio for a few quick portraits.

I hope your Thanksgiving was full and festive. As the holiday season continues, remember to make note of life's details. Maybe it's a recipe, an object, a face or a family portrait. All become part of your journey, your story to be remembered.

The annual conference of the Association of Personal Historians was held in Franklin, TN, November 8 – 11, 2007. It was an amazing weekend of speakers, workshops, music and conversation focused around the theme of storytelling; specifically the importance of listening to personal stories and preserving those stories for future generations.

It's hard to put into words the fullness and richness of the experience. For now, please listen to the tune Jane Baxter, owner of Roots and Branches Productions and our conference host and organizer, wrote. In my opinion the inspired song reflects the real, raw, root passion and spirit of the APH community – a community I'm honored to be a part of.

I thank everyone at the conference for reminding me of the essential role of storytellers. Simply, storytellers keep history alive. Sharing stories is fundamental to understanding one another and understanding ourselves. Whether you tell a story to heal or to teach, it's important to tell it. Your experience, your perception is unique to the world and you never know who you will effect by giving. The other side of telling of course, is to listen – with attention and presence; a larger challenge at times. By joining the APH community, I link forces with others who share my values and commitment, on a personal and professional level, to become a better storyteller and an active, open listener. And, wow, the weekend was a testament that in the act of listening, you receive.

In Santa Fe: Lightroom and Photoshop for Photographers

I've been teaching digital imaging workshops at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops for the last six years and this week an Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom class in Santa Fe, NM marks the last class on the calendar for me. That's right. I'm taking a year off to focus on my personal history and portraiture business. But, this week, like others before, has been a blast! Guiding 12 talented and creative photographers through the process of organizing, editing, enhancing and printing images with the goal of sharing and presenting those images is a thrill. I know, the group shot doesn't quite show the excitement we've been experiencing because it was taken outside. The fun has been happening inside; in the dark, in the digital lab. Don't worry we'll get back outside soon to find the muse.

Apples! Recipes?

Fall is my favorite season. The cooler days, the smell in the air, the glowing colors radiating from the changing leaves is so energizing!! And, the season is filled with nostalgia... which this weekend, came in the flavor of apples! You see, as the landscape changes, so does my culinary palette. My craving for fresh, crisp salads and cool fruit shifts to oatmeal in the morning and warm soups, usually with sesonal squash and other fall veggies, in the evening.

Yesterday, I was out for a drive along the lovely and scenic St. Croix trail, a road that follows the St. Croix river, and although I wasn't certain I'd find an orchard, my eyes were searching for a U-Pick sign. And, when I saw one, I turned in and found myself amongst gorgeous reds, yellow and green varieties of plump, juicy, ripe apples at Pleasant Valley Orchard. The task– fill the bag with Haralsons, the red hearty cooking apple recommended for pies, sauces, and other baking treats. Yup, I was going to try to recreate the applesauce I grew up with.

And, after the bag was filled and I'd had my glass of apple cider and was heading home, I called my Granny on the phone... to say hi and to get that special recipe. I missed her. She called back and I was out of range. She called again and I was fighting city traffic. By the time I was back home, relaxed, ready for a conversation it was too late. But, I cored and peeled the apples anyway, and decided to follow the basic suggestions from a random cookbook; water, cinnamon, sugar, cook. And this morning when I woke up to the slow cooker warming the batch, I dipped my spoon in, took the first bite and wish I had gotten Granny on the phone. Because it wasn't the same. It didn't suit or satisfy the craving.

I guess the craving wasn't just for apples and applesauce, but for the sweet memory of childhood. The days I spent in my grandparents house, on their farm, in their kitchen and in their care. It wasn't good enough to pull ANY recipe from a book, I needed THAT recipe... and I didn't have it. But, luckily, I bought more apples then I needed... so today I will call her again, WRITE DOWN the recipe and try again.

you haven't read, Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albom, borrow it from a friend and spend an evening with Mitch and Morrie. I've seen the book on the shelves or in most instances the moment you walk into a book store, for years, but it took a friend to suggest the obvious, that I actually read it! And, so I did.

And, so you journey into another's life and consider the lessons he's learned... and of course you can't help but reflect on your own. And, you laugh and you cry and you carry on, somewhat different.

Morrie has many lines to quote, but the one I think about in relation to my work life is: "The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning." I feel really blessed to have found a career that is a passion, a love and personal pursuit. Both photography and documenting personal histories allow me to connect with people in a deep, meaningful way and provide them with a product of their story that can live on for generations.

The book, in addition to being a sweet read, is a perfect example of what I hope to do with people; sit down, listen, question and record their experience, their beliefs around Fear, Aging, Marriage, Family, Culture and basically the meaning of life.
